SMC 201 Seamanship and fish handling

The objectives are that students should be familiar with the various layouts of fishing vessels and with the methods of handling fishing gear at sea in a variety of different fisheries. Students also receive some instruction in fish handling practices with particular reference to maintaining fish quality.


Students are given the opportunity to examine several fishing vessels and a variety of ship models are also available for examination. Fish markets are also visited to allow students to observe the local auction system in action.

Teaching staff reserve the right to adjust the length of session in particular modules or to leave out sections, according to the requirements of individual groups of students.
