MWC 101 Pelagic (midwater) trawl gear

Objectives:

The course covers the main types of trawls used for fishing high in the water column and examines the environmental effects of pelagic trawling.

Contents:

The course includes extensive observation of gears in the flume tank, both with diamond and hexagonal mesh netting. The course discusses the fishing methods and fish species that are caught with this kind of fishing gears and makes use of underwater video footage of pelagic trawls.

Material supplied by the instructor on paper and in electronic format.

Teaching staff reserve the right to adjust the length of session in particular modules or to leave out sections, according to the requirements of individual groups of students.
