BTC 101 Demersal (bottom) trawl gear

Objectives:

Students should by the end of the sessions be familiar with various types of trawls for demersal species, including cod, shrimp and prawn trawls, as well as other models. The course covers the effects of changing rigging and hanging ratios to alter a trawl's performance and also covers different types of trawl doors available.

Contents:

Trawls with different hanging ratios (35%, 40% and 60%) are shown in the flume tank, with students given the opportunity to compare areas, shape and water resistance. The course includes observation of underwater video footage of trawls in use.

Study material:

Material supplied by the instructor on paper and in electronic format, practical sessions using the flume tank.

Teaching staff reserve the right to adjust the length of session in particular modules or to leave out sections, according to the requirements of individual groups of students.
